Third meeting 7th - 9th of December 2023
The third network meeting took place at the Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies of the Johannes Gutenberg University, located in Germersheim.
The focus of the face-to-face meeting was on analyzing participation and (self)positioning in (triadic) interactions from a macro-level perspective. In particular, it was explored which forms of multilingualism in heteroglossic societies can constitute barriers to social participation of its members, to what extent these barriers may be constituted by language and translation ideologies, and what role different forms of translation play in the context of participation or non-participation of society members.
The network members approached the topic by drawing from their own empirical research and shared their insights in the form of short presentations. Further valuable input was received through expert talks on Language myths, positioning and participation: Connections and challenges (Silke Jansen, Erlangen), Cross-cultural adaptation as a means for translation: A South African perspective (Harold Lesch, Stellenbosch), and Translation: A Missing Link in the Public Sphere? (Sergey Tyulenev, Durham). The discussions and joint work were held recurring to methods like World Café and Card Inquiry, which stimulated a dynamic and fruitful exchange.
